From the Classroom to the Podium: Why Sports-Integrated Education Creates Stronger Students
Himachal's Growing Sports Ambition
Himachal Pradesh is rapidly becoming a state that takes sports seriously — not just as recreation, but as a legitimate career path. The state government's policy of offering government employment to successful athletes has sent a clear message: sporting excellence is valued and rewarded.
For parents, this creates an important question: Is my child's school giving them a real opportunity to develop athletically, or is sports just a nameplate on the timetable?
At R.K. International School, the answer is visible in results.
The RKIS Track Record
National Volleyball Championship — Siya Thakur (2026): Our very own Siya Thakur represented the region at the National Volleyball Championship, returning to a hero's welcome on campus. Her journey from the RKIS sports ground to the national podium is a testament to what consistent training and school support can achieve.
U-17 District Cricket Championship — 2024 (Unbeaten Champions): Our under-17 cricket team didn't just win the district championship — they went through the entire tournament unbeaten. This wasn't a fluke. It was the result of daily practice sessions, structured coaching, and a school culture that treats the cricket pitch as seriously as the science lab.
Inter-School Athletics Meet — 2024 (3 Medals): RKIS students won Gold in the 100m Sprint, Silver in Long Jump, and Bronze in Shot Put. Three different disciplines, three different students — showing the breadth of athletic talent being nurtured at the school.
Yoga Day National Championship — 2023: RKIS students represented at the national level, reflecting our commitment to traditional Indian physical disciplines alongside modern sports.
Why 3:30 to 6:00 PM Is Sacred at RKIS
Every day, between 3:30 and 6:00 PM, the RKIS campus transforms. The cricket ground comes alive, the volleyball courts fill up, athletes train on the track, and students explore activities from badminton to yoga.
This isn't optional free time. It's a structured part of our educational philosophy, built on the understanding that physical activity directly enhances academic performance. Studies consistently show that students who exercise regularly demonstrate better memory, sharper focus, and lower exam anxiety.
Our boarding students benefit most — they don't lose this time to commuting or tuition classes. Every afternoon is theirs to develop physically, build friendships through team sports, and learn the lessons that only competition can teach.
Values Education Through Sport
At RKIS, we talk about VETS — Values Education Through Sport. Here's what our students learn on the field that transfers directly to life:
Resilience: Losing a match teaches students to pick themselves up, analyse what went wrong, and try again. This is the same skill that helps them tackle a difficult exam or a challenging career situation later in life.
Teamwork: Cricket requires eleven players working as one unit. The student who learns to trust their teammates on the field learns to collaborate effectively in group projects, at university, and in the workplace.
Discipline: Training schedules, fitness routines, and match preparation require consistency. Students who maintain athletic discipline consistently show better time management in their academics.
Grace and humility: Winning well and losing well are both skills. Our Inter-School Kabaddi Tournament participation (Runners-up, 2019) taught students that coming second is not failure — it's motivation.
The Balance That Works
Parents often worry that sports will distract from studies. At RKIS, the evidence points the other way. Our students who are most active in sports are often among the strongest academically — the discipline carries over.
The 2024-25 CBSE Board results showed a 100% pass rate with the highest JEE Mains score reaching 90.5 percentile. Many of these students were active participants in school sports programmes. Two students secured admission to NIT Hamirpur — and both were regular on the sports ground.
