Raising Climate-Conscious Kids: How RKIS Brings Environmental Education to Life

Why Climate Education Matters Now — Especially in Himachal

Himachal Pradesh is on the frontlines of climate change. Unpredictable snowfall, flash floods in Mandi district, shifting agricultural seasons — our students are growing up in a state where environmental changes are not abstract concepts but daily realities.

The UNESCO HP-FUTURES (Himachal Pradesh — Future-proofing Through Upskilling, Technology, Resilience, Equity, and Sustainability) project is now rolling out across the state, bringing climate resilience and eco-education into formal curricula. It's a recognition that the next generation needs more than textbook knowledge about the environment — they need the skills and mindset to protect it.

At R.K. International School, nestled at 900 metres in the Himalayan foothills of Sarkaghat, this isn't a new idea. Our campus itself is a living classroom for environmental education.

500 Saplings and Counting: The Van Mahotsav Story

In 2024, RKIS students planted over 500 saplings as part of the Van Mahotsav Tree Plantation Drive. This wasn't a photo opportunity — it was a full-day event where students learned about native Himalayan species, soil conservation, and the role of forests in preventing the landslides that regularly affect our region.

Students didn't just dig holes and drop in seedlings. They studied which species would thrive at our altitude, calculated spacing for optimal growth, and committed to monitoring their saplings through the monsoon season.

From Clean-Up Drives to Civic Responsibility

Our Swachh Bharat Abhiyan participation in 2023 went beyond sweeping the campus. Students organised a cleanliness drive and awareness rally through the local community, engaging with shopkeepers, residents, and fellow students about waste segregation and plastic reduction.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when the world was focused on health, our students and staff organised a Community Outreach programme distributing essential supplies to families in need — demonstrating that environmental and social responsibility go hand in hand.

The Campus as a Classroom

At 900 metres altitude, surrounded by Himalayan forests, the RKIS campus offers what no urban school can — direct, daily contact with the natural world. Morning exercise on the grounds means breathing clean mountain air. Science classes can step outside to study local ecosystems firsthand. Weather patterns, seasonal changes, and biodiversity aren't abstract chapters — they're visible from the classroom window.

This natural advantage is something we consciously integrate into our teaching. When students study the water cycle, they can observe it in the mist that rolls through our valley. When they learn about deforestation, they can see the difference between forested and cleared hillsides on their own campus surroundings.

Building Tomorrow's Environmental Leaders

The HP-FUTURES initiative recognises that Himachal Pradesh needs young people who understand climate science, sustainable agriculture, disaster preparedness, and green technology. At RKIS, we're building this foundation through practical, hands-on experiences:

Our science labs support project-based environmental research. The 1st Prize at the 2022 District Science Exhibition for a Solar Water Heater Model demonstrated that our students can apply green technology concepts to solve real problems.

The values we teach — responsibility, integrity, and community — naturally extend to environmental stewardship. A student who plants 500 trees doesn't just learn about ecology. They learn about commitment, patience, and the idea that their actions today shape the world they'll inherit.

What Parents Can Encourage at Home

Start conversations about local changes. Ask your child what they've noticed about weather patterns, water availability, or seasonal shifts in your area.

Make sustainability practical. Reducing waste, conserving water, and composting aren't just good habits — they're lessons in environmental science that happen at the kitchen table.

Support outdoor exploration. In Himachal Pradesh, we're blessed with incredible natural beauty. Family hikes, nature walks, and visits to local forests build the connection to environment that no textbook can replace.

At RKIS, we believe that the students who will solve tomorrow's environmental challenges are the ones getting their hands dirty in the garden today. Discover our campus and approach or plan a visit.
